Comparing Mass

Today was Math Challenge Day! The students were challenged to use balance scales to find 5 items in the classroom that had the same mass as a crumbled up piece of paper.

Here are some of our findings:

An eraser is HEAVIER than a piece of paper.

A poker chip has the same mass as a piece of paper.

A rod has almost the same mass as a piece of paper.

A toy potato has the same mass as a piece of paper.

A plastic cube has the same mass as a piece of paper.

After, we shared our findings as a class. We discussed how discovering which items were heavier or lighter than a piece of paper helped us to find the items that might be the same mass as a piece of paper. For example, if an eraser was too heavy, we could look for a small size eraser to try. Or if a plastic toy was too light, we could look for a toy made of a heavier material to try.
