Making Maps of Our Bedrooms

In Grade One Social Studies, students are expected to learn how to make maps of familiar environments; this includes making accurate maps, complete with a title and legend. Today, the Grade Ones made a map of one of their most familiar places – their bedroom. 

To begin, we reviewed what maps need, the importance of scale (the size of the object in real life properly represented using the size of the symbol on the map) and using a bird’s eye view. Then, I modeled making a map of my bedroom. After, we brainstormed objects found in a kid’s bedroom and recorded them on a chart; the students then used this chart to help them with spelling the words on their legend.
