Today, in Math, the students were given the opportunity to explore a new math tool – balance scales. The students were given time and permission to use any classroom tools to help them explore. I witnessed some FANTASTIC discussions and discoveries; here is a glimpse.
Halfway through our discovery session, I brought the students together to share their discoveries. We also reviewed how to use a balance scale properly. After, the students returned to their discoveries and used their new learning to further their exploration.
We will continue to use this tool over the next week to explore mass as the students use the scales to compare the mass of objects and measure mass using non-standard units.
