Activating Our Schemas

Today we discussed what “activating our schemas” means and why it is important. The students learned that activating our schemas is a Key to Succeed when making predictions.

Schema means your prior knowledge of a topic. I explained to students that their brain is like a giant dresser, with drawers to hold information about different topics.

This week, we are reading a poster called Parade Day. To begin we read the title and examined the picture.

Then we opened our “parade drawer” to see what information we already know about parades.

After, we acted out a parade to help those who have never been to one visualize what a parade is like.
