Month: December 2016

Holiday Message

I would like to take this time to say we made it! We made it through the busy holiday rush, we made it through the holiday concert and class trip, we made it to today, December 23rd – the last day of school for 2016. I anticipate today to be one full of excitement, joy and anticipation. I look forward to spending some “fun” time with the students, singing carols, doing some holiday Math-art and partying at the end of the day.

Parents, thank you so much for a fantastic start to the year. It is always difficult to start fresh, for both students and teachers. I appreciate your patience with the me as I learn about your community and the school. I really enjoy teaching at HD and working with such an energetic, loving and, at times, hilarious group of Grade Ones.

I would like to wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break. See you in the New Year!

Number Talk

Here was the topic for today’s number talk.

Here was our Math thinking.

Today we had the opportunity to learn how to respectful disagree with someone else’s idea. We learned that we all “see” Math differently and it is important to share our ideas in a respectful way; even when we disagree with someone else’s thinking.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Games

Today we wrapped up our Health unit about Healthy Habits and Behaviours. To celebrate, we played an exercise game that the students helped design.

To begin, the students identified four exercises that they like to do and then we assigned a card suit to each.

To play, students must first touch 10 chairs then they have to select a card from the table closest to them. The card dictates how many and which exercise the student must do. For example, the eight of hearts means the student must do eight push-ups.
